Title: Use of Mobile Wireless Devices for Voice Calls on Aircraft | |
Abstract:
This rulemaking would restrict voice communications on passengers mobile wireless devices on scheduled flights within, to and from the United States. In 2013, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a notice of proposed rulemaking that, if adopted would, among other things, create a pathway for airlines to permit the use of cell phones or other mobile wireless devices to make or receive calls on board aircraft. At present, however, air carriers do not offer voice call service within U.S. airspace. Also, the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 requires DOT to issue a regulation to prohibit an individual on an aircraft from engaging in voice communications using a mobile communications device during a scheduled flight, with exceptions for flight crew, flight attendants, and Federal law enforcement officers acting in an official capacity. |
