In response to a recommendation by the North Pacific Fishery Management Council, this proposed action would modify the seasonal allocation of pollock and Pacific cod total allowable catch (TAC) in the Central and Western Gulf of Alaska (GOA). The purpose of this action is to reduce operational and management inefficiencies for pollock and Pacific cod catcher vessels (CVs) using trawl gear in the Central and Western GOA by 1) reducing regulatory time gaps between the pollock fishery A and B seasons and C and D seasons and 2) changing seasonal Pacific cod apportionments in the GOA to allow greater harvest opportunities earlier in the year. Modifying the seasonal allocations of pollock and Pacific cod could allow participants in these fisheries to more fully harvest the pollock and Pacific cod TAC in the GOA, increase management flexibility, and potentially decrease prohibited species catch while not redistributing fishing opportunities between management areas or harvest sectors.
