Title: Amendments to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for Lighting
Abstract: This notice seeks public comment on NHTSA's effort to update the safety standard FMVSS No. 108 for vehicle lighting. Specifically, NHTSA seeks comment on the effectiveness of some design-oriented provisions, such as minimum lamp size requirements, optical material certification process, and headlamp bulb marking requirements, as well as potential alternatives to make the standard more performance-based to reduce regulatory compliance and certification costs to manufacturers. Modifications to provisions in FMVSS No. 108 would update the standard and address longstanding requirements that may no longer be effective, while reducing manufacturers' compliance and certification costs.
