Title: ●Updates to Marine Engineering Standards
Abstract:

We intend to publish a notice of proposed rulemaking announcing the incorporation by reference (IBR) of up-to-date standards, the elimination of outdated or unnecessarily prescriptive regulations, and the inclusion of acceptable alternative standards in 46 CFR subchapter F Marine Engineering. This includes the updates to 67 IBRs. Due to advancements in technology, up-to-date standards are necessary to ensure that we address current engineering equipment and technologies in our regulations. Additionally, subchapter F contains numerous instances where regulatory text incorporates an industry standard and includes additional requirements. A substantial portion of that regulatory text would be removed by adopting current editions of incorporated standards. Finally, these changes would align standards already being used by industry across multiple subchapters that reference subchapter F. This rule would reduce burdens by eliminating outdated or unnecessarily prescriptive regulations.
