DOT/FMCSA RIN: 2126-AC54 Publication ID: Fall 2021
Title: ●Unique Electronic Identification of Commercial Motor Vehicles
Abstract:

FMCSA requests public comment on potential amendments to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) to require every commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operating in interstate commerce to be equipped with an electronic device capable of communicating a unique identification number when queried by a roadside system.  In response to a petition for rulemaking from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), FMCSA is considering such amendments as a possible means to improve the effectiveness of the roadside inspection program by more fully enabling enforcement agencies to target their efforts at high-risk operators, while at the same time providing an incentive for safe and legal operations.
