Title: ●Fisheries of the Northeastern United States; Amendment 23 to the Mackerel, Squid, and Butterfish Fishery Management Plan | |
Abstract:
The 2021 Mackerel Management Track Assessment (MTA) found the Atlantic mackerel stock to still be overfished, with overfishing still occurring through 2019. The 2021 Mackerel MTA determined that when implement (November 29, 2019), the original rebuilding plan was already out of date and did not provide a realistic rebuilding approach. The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council approved Amendment 23 to the Mackerel, Squid, and Butterfish Fishery Management Plan. This action would establish specifications for 2023 to rebuild the Atlantic mackerel stock in ten years (by 2032). The updated rebuilding plan for Atlantic mackerel integrate the results of the most recent stock assessment and reflect the best available science, as required by the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. This action proposes to only set 2023 specifications given a new Mackerel MTA is expected in 2023. |
