Title: Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Establishing a Nonessential Experimental Population of the Guam Kingfisher on Palmyra Atoll, USA | |
Abstract:
FWS will make a final determination on the proposal to designate all Guam kingfishers released on Palmyra Atoll as a nonessential experimental population under section 10(j) of the Endangered Species Act. The Guam kingfisher (Todiramphus cinnamominus), or Sihek, is a bird that was previously endemic to the island of Guam but has existed only in captivity since the 1980s. The primary cause of its decline and extinction in the wild was predation by the nonnative brown treesnake (Boiga irregularis). The threat of the brown treesnake on Guam presently precludes reintroducing Guam kingfishers within their historical range. Prior to restoring Guam kingfishers to Guam, FWS proposes to release Guam kingfishers on Palmyra Atoll. |
