Title: ●Atlantic Highly Migratory Species; 2024 Atlantic Shark Commercial Fishing Year | |
Abstract:
Atlantic highly migratory species (HMS) are managed under the authority of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, 16 U.S.C. 1801 et seq., and the Atlantic Tunas Convention Act (ATCA), id. 971 et seq., the implementing statute for binding recommendations of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas. This rule will consider options to: automatically open the Atlantic shark commercial fishing year on January 1 each year under base quotas and retention limits, and revise the default commercial retention limit for the large coastal shark fisheries. This rule will also establish the adjusted quotas, opening dates, and opening retention limits for the 2024 Atlantic shark commercial fishing year. In 2021, ex-vessel revenues for the entire Atlantic shark fishery totaled approximately $2.6M. Because this action does not change the amount of sharks that could be landed, this action would not change the expected annual revenue. This action is being taken pursuant to the rulemaking authority under section 304(c) of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. 16 U.S.C. 1854(c). |
