Title: Incidental Take of Marine Mammals During Specified Activities; Polar Bears and Pacific Walruses in the Southern Beaufort Sea | |
Abstract:
This proposed rule would authorize the incidental nonlethal take of small numbers of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) and Pacific walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) in the Southern Beaufort Sea and adjacent coast of Alaska during seismic activities related to oil and gas industry for 5 years, as requested by SAE Inc. The Marine Mammal Protection Act directs FWS to issue regulations for up to 5 years to allow the incidental, unintentional take of small numbers of marine mammals for specified activities (other than commercial fishing) in specific geographical areas provided certain findings are made. |
